# ALTER PITR

`ALTER PITR` changes the retention range of an existing PITR. You need permission to manage that PITR. See [CREATE PITR](create-pitr.md) for its scope.

## Syntax

```sql
ALTER PITR pitr_name RANGE value unit;
```

`pitr_name` is the name of an existing PITR. See [CREATE PITR parameters](create-pitr.md#syntax-interpretation) for the values of `value` and `unit`.

## Example

Replace `your_pitr` with the name of an existing PITR that you can manage, and change its retention range to two hours:

```sql
ALTER PITR your_pitr RANGE 2 'h';
SHOW PITR WHERE pitr_name = 'your_pitr';
```

Check `pitr_length` and `pitr_unit` in the result. Confirm that the new retention range meets your recovery requirements before changing it.
